Ernie Gunderson, his singer-songwriter sister Eunice and his partner Becky, present the inspiring story of Mary Gunderson’s life and her response to a family tragedy. The presentation, narrated by Ernie, includes photos and excerpts from Ernie's book, Hartland to Capitol Hill: The Journey of a Wounded Healer, based on an unpublished memoir written by his mother. The program is interspersed with songs written and performed by Eunice.
The daughter of Danish immigrants, Mary Gunderson, tells the heartrending tale of settling in rural Minnesota just before the Great Depression. She describes her checkered career as a country school teacher in the 1940’s, which ends in a crushing nervous breakdown. She goes on to marry a farmer and raises 11 children, 2 of whom succumb to mental illness and suicide. Mary’s recovery from this tragedy begins when she starts a chapter of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) in her hometown, becoming an advocate for others suffering from mental illness.
