DESCRIPTION:We are excited to welcome David Schultz\, Distinguished University Professor of Political Science and Legal Studies at Hamline University to lead this VAN Forum. \n\n\n\nDemocracy is not something that happens to you. It is something you do. \n\n\n\nAt its core\, democracy is about people; individuals using their voices\, organizing power\, and shaping the decisions that affect their lives. \n\n\n\nThis session explores the essential questions of democracy: who participates\, what institutions matter\, when engagement is most effective\, where decisions are made\, and why participation is critical. \n\n\n\nWe will focus especially on how local government works\, where democracy is often most immediate and most impactful. You will learn what it takes to be an informed citizen\, how decisions are made in your community\, and most importantly\, how to get involved in ways that matter. \n\n\n\nIf democracy depends on participation\, then this session is about how you can move from observer to actor and have real influence where you live. \n\n\n\nBio\n\n\n\nDavid Schultz is a Distinguished Professor of Political Science and Legal Studies at Hamline University. For more than four decades\, he has worked with community members\, students\, and public institutions to strengthen civic engagement and amplify voices in local democracies.

DESCRIPTION:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly part of everyday life\, from online searches and email to healthcare tools\, financial services\, and news and social media platforms.  \n\n\n\nLana Medina\, faculty member\, St. Thomas University\n\n\n\nLana Medina\, an award-winning journalist and a faculty member at the University of St. Thomas\, will lead this exploration of how AI can make daily tasks easier and improve access to information. \n\n\n\nThe session will also discuss important things to be aware of\, including AI-driven misinformation and disinformation\, deepfakes\, online scams\, and how algorithms influence the information we see.  \n\n\n\nParticipants will gain practical strategies for evaluating information and using AI tools thoughtfully.
