My first portage was in the spring of 1960. I was 14 years old. I remember that first trip so well today. It was a great introduction to the Minnesota Boundary Waters. It was a special trip; I had the chance opportunity to meet Sigurd Olson one of America’s best-known naturalists at the time and have lunch with him. It left a lifelong impression with me.
Since that first date, I have made numerous trips throughout the BWCA. Paddling and portaging throughout dozens of lakes and rivers, I have a lifetime of great memories with many friends. Together we have had the opportunity to share this incredibly special place in Minnesota.
This past winter in the middle of January I had what I thought was a brilliant idea, to introduce my two granddaughters to the Canoe County. They are 13 and 15 years old. In our earlier days, my wife and I had taken our two children on numerous canoe trips. Mostly successful.
Our daughter and her husband both agreed a day trip would be a good introduction to the BWCA. So, plans and reservations were made. The trip started well, I felt great, until I hit the first portage. In my attempt to exit the canoe, I slipped! My back was now in serious pain. I was not going to let this stop us. We did accomplish the eight miles, which included six portages. My most heartwarming impression of the trip was to watch my two grandchildren pick up the slack, carrying the canoe and packs.
I have recovered from pulled back muscles; my family now all laugh about the experience. The whole event brought back a quote I remember from years ago, “Take counsel of the years, surrendering the things of youth”.
As we state in Aging with Gusto, we need to continue to evolve and to be realistic to our abilities and limitations.
My granddaughters both promised they will return.
